Smelly Butterfly

3rd of February, 2010

When I was 14-15 years old, I started coding. Except it never looked quite good. Which is why I started designing websites as well. Code without design is highly functional, but less pleasing to look at. I wanted a 'cool' website damnit!

As 20 years old now, I've gotten quite a bit of experience with design. It still bugs me though that I cannot just sit down and make something awesomely beautiful whenever I want to.

Which is where the Smelly Butterfly comes in.

Smelly

Smelly Butterfly was a by-product of my frustrations. I wanted something nice, but nice wouldn't come to me without lots of work put into it. And who was I to have such energy?

Design and coding are two completely different things. In coding, even without inspiration, I can sit down - soldier on - and I will eventually produce something sensible. In design, soldiering on can mean ruining the piece beyond recognition.

I highly believe in practice makes perfect, which is why I keep at it. Sometimes the result is good, in which case I will proudly display it. Other times though…

It's funny because in the end, Smelly Butterfly turned out perfect for the purpose I had made it for. It's big, you cannot avoid the sheer size of said butterfly. The colours indicate something foul yet fresh. Exactly suited for my needs.

Now, what I'd originally sketched up in my head was this beautiful, elegant butterfly with lots of details. It was magnificent. Turns out that I burned myself on yet again not having the go-go spirit to actually duplicate my lovely fictional creature.

So Smelly Butterfly, I welcome you to this world. May you live many happy days as your smelly self. Perhaps you'll even one day get a beautiful cousin?
